From CPLA to Wood: Food-Contact Materials in Inflight Cutlery

Every material that touches food on an aircraft has to satisfy two tests at once: it has to be genuinely safe for direct food contact, and it has to fit whichever lifecycle model — rotable or disposable — the item was designed for. Walking a supplier's material list from compostable bioplastic through to solid wood and stainless steel shows how differently those two constraints play out across a single catering menu.

PLA and CPLA: Compostable Bioplastics

PLA (polylactic acid) is a bioplastic made from renewable plant-based feedstock rather than petroleum, and it's used across the catering industry for single-use cutlery and packaging that's compostable under industrial composting conditions instead of ending up as ordinary landfill plastic. CPLA is a heat-treated variant of the same base polymer, formulated to hold its shape at somewhat higher temperatures than standard PLA — still single-use, still compostable, just better suited to hot food contact. Why Compostable Isn't the Same as Biodegradable Everywhere

It's worth separating two related but different claims about PLA and CPLA. Both are compostable under industrial composting conditions — sustained heat and moisture managed inside a dedicated facility — which is not the same as breaking down quickly in an ordinary landfill or in open water. Whether a compostable item actually gets composted at the end of its life depends on the waste infrastructure available at the airport or destination, not on the material alone, which is a genuine limitation worth understanding rather than glossing over when comparing it to a plain plastic alternative.

Wood: A Renewable, Traditional Alternative

Wooden cutlery sits alongside PLA and CPLA in the same segment of a catering menu — a renewable material, shaped into disposable utensils, with no wash cycle and no plastic feedstock at all. Airlines choose it for the same single-use economy service that PLA and CPLA cover, generally where they want a visibly natural material rather than a bioplastic finish. Because it goes directly into a passenger's mouth, food-service wooden cutlery has to be produced from food-contact-grade wood and finished without dyes, adhesives or coatings that could leach into a meal — the same food-contact discipline that applies to every other material on this list, plastic or metal.

CPP and CPET: the Working Plastics of the Tray

Trays and containers lean on a different pair of food-safe plastics than cutlery does, and the two aren't interchangeable. CPP (cast polypropylene) is a food-grade plastic sheet material commonly used for chilled or ambient meal trays and lidding, where the tray never sees an oven. CPET — a crystallized form of polyester — is formulated to survive the swing from freezer storage straight through an onboard oven reheat without deforming, which is what lets a single tray move from a catering kitchen's freezer to a passenger's tray table in one piece. Our CPET tray is built around that freezer-to-oven requirement. The choice between CPP and CPET trays also tracks an airline's onboard reheating method as much as its budget: a caterer serving only chilled or ambient meals has little functional reason to pay for an oven-safe CPET tray it will never put in an oven.

Metal: Stainless Steel and Aluminium on the Rotable Side

On the rotable side of the same menu, stainless steel is the default choice for cutlery and serving pieces that need to survive an indefinite number of wash-sanitize cycles without pitting or holding onto odors — our own stainless steel cutlery is built to that standard. Aluminium shows up on both sides of the lifecycle line depending on how the specific item is finished: a coated, branded aluminium casserole is built to be washed and reissued, while a plain aluminium foil container is typically a one-trip disposable item.

Matching Material to the Item's Job

Every material on this list starts from the same baseline requirement — food-contact grade, safe to hold food directly — and then splits according to the job the item has to do.
