Atlas Standard Explained: How Airline Meal Trays, Drawers and Carts Fit Together
Walk through almost any inflight-equipment supplier's catalog and one word keeps turning up in front of trays, drawers, oven inserts and carts: Atlas. It isn't a brand, a material or a product family — it's a sizing convention. Atlas-branded items share a set of external dimensions built to fit the same trolley bays, oven racks and cart openings used across the catering industry, so equipment from different manufacturers can sit side by side in the same aircraft galley without a custom rebuild for every fleet, and a single caterer can buy trays, drawers and carts from several different suppliers without a compatibility problem.
What "Atlas" Actually Describes
An aircraft galley trolley has a fixed internal bay — a specific height, width and depth that every shelf, tray and drawer sliding into it has to match exactly. "Atlas" on a spec sheet is shorthand for "built to that shared bay dimension," not a description of what the item is made from or what meal it's meant to hold. Two trays from two different manufacturers, one in plastic and one in aluminium, can both be Atlas-compliant as long as their footprint fits the same slot.
Fractional Sizing: Full, Half and Third
Because a single trolley shelf is often wider than one meal needs, Atlas trays are built in fractions of that footprint rather than one fixed size. A full-size tray fills the entire shelf opening; a half-size tray takes up half that footprint so two sit side by side; a third-size tray lets three narrower trays share the same shelf, which suits smaller portions — condiments, bread, a side dish — rather than a complete meal. This fractional system also lets a single trolley carry more than one course without wasting shelf space: a full-size tray for the main course can sit next to two half trays for a side and a dessert, or three third-size trays split among garnish, bread and condiments, all inside the identical outer footprint the trolley bay was built around. Beyond Trays: Drawers, Oven Inserts and Carts Follow the Same Rule
The same external-dimension discipline extends well past trays. Drawer units, oven inserts, glass racks and full trolleys are all built to slot into the same bay openings, which is why a caterer can standardize on one supplier's drawers and oven inserts even when a different supplier fills the trays inside them. Why Ground Caterers Care About the Standard
Ground catering companies typically load meals for several different airlines out of the same kitchen, using the same fleet of trolleys. If every airline required its own tray and drawer dimensions, a caterer would need a separate set of carts for each customer, eating up warehouse space and slowing down the changeover between flights. Building to a shared external dimension means the same trolley, oven insert and drawer set can carry one airline's meals in the morning and a different airline's meals that same afternoon, with only the food and the branding changing between them.
Material Sits On Top of the Sizing Standard, Not Inside It
Atlas sizing says nothing about what an item is made from. ABS plastic is a common choice for Atlas trays because it tolerates repeated washing and reuse without warping, but the same external dimensions can just as easily hold a single-use item — the Atlas container in our own catalog, for example, is a disposable aluminium foil food container built to the same bay-compatible footprint as a reusable ABS tray. The sizing standard and the material decision are two separate questions, and a caterer can mix answers to both within the same trolley. This separation is also why a buyer sourcing Atlas-compliant equipment should specify both dimension and material up front — asking only for "an Atlas tray" leaves the wash-cycle durability of the item unresolved.
Why the Standard Matters to Buyers
